Structural mechanics (34 lectures/tutorials):

  • Introduction
  • Concepts of stress and strain
  • Behaviour of axially loaded members
  • Internal force analysis of bar structures
  • Properties of cross-sectional areas
  • Longitudinal stresses due to bending
  • Deflections of beams

Introduction to fluid mechanics (18 lectures/tutorials):

  • Analysis of hydrostatic pressure variation and calculation of forces.
  • Analysis of steady flow by continuity and momentum conservation, the Bernoulli equation.
  • Measurement of flow (nozzles, weirs and venturis)

40% internal assessment of Laboratory reports, mid-semester test and weekly assignments plus a three-hour final examination (60%)
