Launceston

This unit has been discontinued.

Note:

Students who do not have the necessary prerequisites for this unit should enrol in KRA001, Chemistry Foundation Unit and KMA003, Mathematics Foundation Unit. A chemistry major is recognised by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) as meeting the requirements for Graduate Member (MRACI) provided that either a mathematics or physics unit is also taken at 1st year level in addition to both KRA101 and KRA102.  Lab coat and safety glasses are required.

Introduction

Together with Chemistry 1B, this is a core unit for the Chemistry major, and for Environmental Science, Science and Biomedical Science students, providing them with the fundamental knowledge and concepts in inorganic, organic and physical chemistry. Inorganic Chemistry (Chemical Bonding and Structure) covers atomic structure, bonding theories, the systematic chemistry of s- and p- block elements. Organic Chemistry covers the preparation, properties and reactions of the major classes of organic compounds. Physical Chemistry in this unit involves a study of the behaviour of gases, the solubility of gases and inorganic and organic compounds, chemical and solution equilibria, colligative properties, acids, bases and buffers.

Note

Please check that your computer meets the minimum System Requirements if you are attending via Distance/Off-Campus.

Units are offered in attending mode unless otherwise indicated (that is attendance is required at the campus identified). A unit identified as offered by distance, that is there is no requirement for attendance, is identified with a nominal enrolment campus. A unit offered to both attending students and by distance from the same campus is identified as having both modes of study.

Special approval is required for enrolment into TNE Program units.

TNE Program units special approval requirements.

* The Final WW Date is the final date from which you can withdraw from the unit without academic penalty, however you will still incur a financial liability (see withdrawal dates explained for more information).

About Census Dates

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Relate atomic structures to the properties of elements and molecular structures to the properties of compounds.
  2. Demonstrate a theoretical and practical knowledge of the occurrence, synthesis, properties and reactions of a number of classes of organic compounds.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the behaviour of gases, electrolyte and non-electrolyte solutions, chemical equilibria, and the behaviour of acids, bases and buffers in water-based systems.
  4. Test and investigate theoretical chemical principles by successfully using fundamental experimental techniques in the laboratory.
