Chemistry 1B KRA102
Launceston
This unit is being phased out, no new enrolments are being taken.
Introduction
Chemistry 1A (Semester 1) and Chemistry 1B (Semester 2) are core units for the Chemistry major, Environmental Science and Biomedical Science students and give an introduction to the fundamentals of chemistry. Both units build on the introduction to chemistry given in year 12 and provide a foundation to four of the sub-disciplines of chemistry: inorganic, organic, analytical and physical chemistry.
Chemistry 1B provides students with more fundamental knowledge and concepts in inorganic, organic and physical chemistry. Organic Chemistry covers aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acids and their derivatives, and amines and explores the biological applications of organic chemistry. Inorganic Chemistry (Chemical Bonding and Structure) introduces the coordination chemistry of the transition metals, including the significance of coordination compounds in biology and the environment. It also introduces analytical chemistry. Physical Chemistry in this unit involves a study of thermochemistry (including heat capacity and specific heat, calorimetry, Hesss law, enthalpy, and foods and fuels), thermodynamics (including spontaneity, entropy, and Gibbs free energy), chemical kinetics (including rates of reaction, the Arrhenius equation, activation energy, and catalysis), and electrochemistry (including electrochemical cells, the Nernst equation, batteries and fuel cells, corrosion, electrolysis).

Learning Outcomes
- demonstrate a theoretical and practical knowledge of the occurrence, synthesis, properties and reactions of the aldehydes, ketones and organic acids.
- demonstrate knowledge of the importance of organic compounds in biology.
- demonstrate an understanding of the coordination chemistry of the transition metals, including in biology and the environment.
- demonstrate an understanding and practical knowledge of introductory analytical chemistry.
- demonstrate an understanding and practical knowledge of thermochemistry, chemical thermodynamics and chemical kinetics and be able to use these to determine if a chemical reaction is likely to occur and how fast it will occur.
- demonstrate an understanding of general principles governing electrochemistry and apply these to corrosion, corrosion protection, batteries and electrolysis.
