Courses & Units
Chemistry 1A KRA113
Introduction
This unit (along with Chemistry 1B in Semester 2) is the required prerequisite for students intending to major in Chemistry and for those intending to proceed to any second-year chemistry unit. The unit builds on the introduction to chemistry given in year 12 and provides a foundation to four of the sub disciplines of chemistry: analytical, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry. Emphasis is placed on: • Explaining underlying concepts in chemistry, so that generalisations regarding the physical and chemical properties of substances can be made. • Developing problem solving abilities. • Developing and expanding the skills necessary to carry out experiments safely and efficiently in the laboratory. The unit is delivered in blended mode with the equivalent of 36 hours of lecture content provided as recordings via MyLO across 12 weeks, complemented with 2 hours weekly face-to-face or online workshops / tutorials and 24 hours (or equivalent) laboratory experience, either undertaken as weekly 3 hour laboratory sessions or an intensive block of laboratory sessions over 2-3 days late in the semester. Whilst the unit is formally offered in on-campus study mode, the blended delivery mode combined with the intensive block of laboratory sessions over 2-3 days late in the semester provides an option for “off-campus” study – students wishing to undertake the unit in the “off-campus” study mode should contact the Unit Coordinator for further details.

Note
Please check that your computer meets the minimum System Requirements if you are attending via Distance/Off-Campus.
Units are offered in attending mode unless otherwise indicated (that is attendance is required at the campus identified). A unit identified as offered by distance, that is there is no requirement for attendance, is identified with a nominal enrolment campus. A unit offered to both attending students and by distance from the same campus is identified as having both modes of study.
Key Dates
Study Period | Start date | Census date | WW date | End date |
---|---|---|---|---|
Semester 1 | 26/2/2024 | 22/3/2024 | 15/4/2024 | 2/6/2024 |
* The Final WW Date is the final date from which you can withdraw from the unit without academic penalty, however you will still incur a financial liability (refer to How do I withdraw from a unit? for more information).
Unit census dates currently displaying for 2024 are indicative and subject to change. Finalised census dates for 2024 will be available from the 1st October 2023. Note census date cutoff is 11.59pm AEST (AEDT during October to March).
Learning Outcomes
- Predict structure and properties of molecules by applying atomic structure and bonding theory.
- Discuss the structure and reactivity of alkyl halide, alkene, and aromatic compounds.
- Solve mathematical and chemical problems using thermochemical and colligative data.
- Demonstrate chemistry laboratory procedures safely and to a competent standard.
Fee Information
The 2024 Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) rates are still being finalised by the Government and we will update the domestic fee information as soon as we have more details.
