Organic and Bioorganic Chemistry KRA341

Introduction

This unit extends the basic understanding of organic chemistry and chemical reactivity from level 200 units and introduces more advanced chemical reactions and the concept of rational synthetic design. 
The course also highlights the key reactions in the synthesis of biological molecules and provides and introduction to the role of natural products and synthetic chemistry to the pharmaceutical sector. Topics that
will be included are selected from: the biosynthesis of biologically important molecules, natural products and medicinal chemistry, the chemistry of reactive intermediates, pericyclic reactions, heterocyclic chemistry, mechanisms of polymer formation and the use of retrosynthetic analysis in the design of multi-­-step chemical syntheses. The laboratory program is closely associated with the lecture material and introduces techniques and instrumentation that are used in modern synthetic chemistry for the synthesis of small organic molecules such as those of importance to the pharmaceutical industry.

  • Apply knowledge of organic and bioorganic chemistry to: - predict chemical properties and reactivity in chemical and biological contexts. - propose mechanistic hypotheses for reactions.
  • Describe and explain the theory behind synthetic polymerisation and apply it to solve problems.
  • Analyse, interpret and predict spectral data to: - determine structure of compounds prepared in the laboratory. - determine and differentiate molecular structure of compounds.
  • Demonstrate safe laboratory techniques and carry out hazard assessment for: - multi-step syntheses and isolation of organic compounds. - the collection of spectroscopic data and determination of physical properties.
  • Communicate in scientific writing in the form of laboratory reports by: - following the given templates. - using appropriate scientific terminology, conventions for representing molecular structures and adhering to standard English conventions. - using chemical databases, such as Scifinder Scholar, to perform literature searches of chemical reactions and organic molecules and identify references accordingly.
  • Communicate scientific concepts in the form of written and oral presentations by correctly using scientific terminology to discuss a chemical research paper.
