Advanced Analytical Techniques KRA344
Hobart
Introduction
This unit will be of importance to all scientists relying on the use of instrumental separation science, mass spectroscopic techniques, and chemical sensors in their field of endeavour. The material has been designed to appeal to the modern scientist with the material presented concentrating on giving a sound foundation to the theory and application of modern instrumental techniques in this area. Topics within this unit are selected from: chromatographic separation techniques, including ion chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography; solid phase extraction; capillary electrophoresis; gas chromatography; hyphenated and multidimensional techniques; portable instrumentation; miniaturised analytical systems; sample handling and preparation; analytical mass spectrometry (inorganic and organic); and electroanalytical applications, including sensors. The laboratory program reinforces concepts introduced in lectures and gives students experience in good laboratory practice and protocol, and hands-on usage of modern research level instrumentation. Overall this unit presents theory and practice of instrumental methods and specific detection technologies in a context relevant and key to all areas of scientific study including, but not limited to the physical sciences, biotechnology, medical and biomedical research, life sciences, earth sciences, agricultural sciences, marine and Antarctic sciences, and pharmaceutical science areas.

Learning Outcomes
- Appreciate the use of a variety of analytical techniques, such as GC, LC, IC, electrophoresis, sensors and mass spectrometry employed for instrumental chemical analysis. The material focuses on understanding the principles behind separations, their interdependence, and their application in analysis.
- Apply fundamental concepts obtained in the lectures and laboratory exercises to a range of analytical and physical chemistry problems.
- Demonstrate experimental skills allowing the application of many of the topics listed above to structure determination and other chemical analyses. In addition, some experience in experimental and interpretive skills not covered in lecture topics will be obtained through the laboratory course.
- Critically appraise both your own work along with that of your peers.
