Introduction

Since 1991 when the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Parties adopted their Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty, all activity in Antarctica has been viewed through the prism of its potential impact on the environment. International treaties protect Antarctica by managing its uses, and human activities sanctioned under these include scientific research, logistic support, fishing, tourism and non-governmental activity. This unit examines all of these activities and the governance arrangements (including laws, guidelines and regulations) under which they operate to highlight the strengths and weaknesses, gaps and overlaps in environmental management in Antarctica.
