This unit provides a more advanced course in oceanography, focused on biogeochemical and physical oceanography, and marine geoscience. It builds on the material presented in KSA205 Introduction to Oceanography. The biogeochemical oceanography part covers mechanisms involved in the carbon cycle and biological pump, distribution of chemical properties in the global ocean, thermodynamic principles, nutrient and carbon cycling, air-sea gas exchange models, primary production and export production models, and biogeochemical tracers of circulation. The physical oceanography part covers circulation of the Southern Ocean, and basics of ocean modelling. The marine geoscience part covers the geomorphology of the seafloor and the mechanisms responsible for their formation, the links between ocean basin morphology and ocean circulation, and how sediment erosion and deposition allow understanding of paleo-oceanographic conditions.
