Introduction
This unit provides an overview to the underlying concepts of globalisation and globalism, specifically focussing on the pre-requisites of, requirements for and impediments to global trade.
The syllabus includes understanding the concepts of globalism and globalisation, trade networks and market access, the development of regional and global economic markets for food. The unit will focus on the organisations, structures, laws and standards underpinning trade including food import and export with particular reference to:
- Sanitary and Phytosanitary Agreement & Technical Barriers to Trade Agreement
- Codex Alimentarius Commission
- World Trade Organisation
- World Health Organisation
- Food and Agriculture Organisation
- Legislation, Food law and Standards
- International Food Law
- Standards setting and principles
- Quarantine and biosecurity

Learning Outcomes
- Graduates of this unit will be able to: Describe the role of Codex, WTO, WHO and FAO in standards setting, facilitation and harmonisation of trade.
- Critically evaluate the consequences of globalisation and international trade on national political, economic and social structures.
- Articulate how the development of seafood products has been influenced by global production and consumption trends.
- Explain the consequences of breaches of biosecurity in terms of impacts to people, animals, plants and the environment.
- Appraise the key prerequisites, requirements and impediments to international trade.
