Oceans, Polar and Climate Practicum KSM702

Introduction

The Practicum provides students with an opportunity to gain the practical skills and deeper insight into the real world of environmental governance, such as by engaging in critical problem solving, testing of theoretical concepts, and collaborative learning in a teamwork setting. The Practicum, which builds on prior assumed knowledge and skills acquired in earlier components of the degree, and previous academic studies, provides students with an opportunity to understand better the links between what they learn at university and the practical application of that knowledge in the community through the development of skills and reflection on a work experience placement. A practicum may be with a government agency (eg, Australian Antarctica Division), business corporation (eg, seafood company), environmental NGO (eg, Ocean Planet) or other organisation that can offer suitable work experience. Drawing from the work undertaken during their practicums, students will complete a paper of some 5,000 - 10,000 words for grading by a member of the participating UTAS academic staff.
