Courses & Units

Physics 1A KYA101

Introduction

The objective of this unit is to provide a thorough grounding in dynamics, mechanics and special relativity (33 lectures) and electromagnetism (17 lectures), and to appreciate the mathematical framework through which quantitative problems in these areas can be solved. On completion of the unit you will be familiar with basic terminology and processes in dynamics and electricity. From the dynamics, you will have developed an appreciation of how the mathematical techniques of vector analysis can assist in formulating and solving physical problems. From the special relativity you will learn how Newtonian dynamics and mechanics are modified at very high speeds. From the electromagetism, you will have developed an understanding of how the mathematical techniques of complex numbers can assist in formulating and solving physical problems. These techniques you will then be able to take with you when studying other more-advanced material in Physics. You will have also further developed your generic problem-solving skills, and your scientific world-view. This unit is required in the Physics Major.

Note

Please check that your computer meets the minimum System Requirements if you are attending via Distance/Off-Campus.

Units are offered in attending mode unless otherwise indicated (that is attendance is required at the campus identified). A unit identified as offered by distance, that is there is no requirement for attendance, is identified with a nominal enrolment campus. A unit offered to both attending students and by distance from the same campus is identified as having both modes of study.
