Introduction
In this unit students will understand and strengthen their Aboriginal Knowledges and connections through research and gathering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander yarns and kani (to speak) through story telling within the Arts across Tasmania and beyond. kani ‘In palawa kani, the language of Tasmanian Aborigines’ means to talk. In the context of this unit it means we're going to gather lots of talk through stories from Aboriginal people in Tasmania and beyond.
This unit will invite guest Aboriginal story tellers to share their knowledges via face to face classes, online lectures, on country experiences and MyLO engagement. Tutorial support will be available to help students engage individually and collaboratively to creatively achieve the learning outcomes of the unit. Students will develop a research diary, share a presentation of an Aboriginal story teller with three samples of their work and critically reflect upon the importance of preserving Aboriginal stories in the community to give voice and agency.
This unit provides students with learning experiences through story telling alongside advancing academic skills, to strengthen student's confidence and resilience against assimilation to prepare them for success at University and beyond.

- Gather different types of Aboriginal stories in Tasmania and beyond that impact on history, people and place
- Describe the connections with identity and Aboriginal self evident in the work and inspirations of Aboriginal story tellers.
- Demonstrate the importance of preserving stories and Aboriginal knowledges to strengthen culture and resilience against assimilation
- Utilise creative mediums and writing to communicate your stories with your peers.
