Communication for effective leadership aims to recognise and extend the development of effective professional communications skills for undergraduate and postgraduate students involved in service and/or leadership activities. This unit is designed to complement students' roles and existing professional development schedule and extend their understanding of their developing leadership skills. The unit will engage students with appropriate models of leadership and the role of effective communication in leadership and service. Students will develop skills in oral and written communication, presentation, negotiation and advocacy.
Communication for effective leadership is offered to all UTAS students who are involved in at least 40 hours of recognised service or leadership roles inside or outside of the UTAS context during the semester undertaking the unit. At UTAS programs or service undertaken would include TUSA representation, Student Ambassador programs and Mentoring programs. In the broader community this may include service clubs (such as Lions club); community/not for profit organisations (for example Camp Quality, St Vincent de Paul, Anglicare, Eddie Rice Camps, Landcare, Conservation volunteers, RSPCA, Scouts, Food Bank) Emergency services (for example Tasmanian Ambulance, SES, Volunteer Fire brigades, Surf Lifesaving); Sports coaching or administration; Community bands or arts-related groups.

Units are offered in attending mode unless otherwise indicated (that is attendance is required at the campus identified). A unit identified as offered by distance, that is there is no requirement for attendance, is identified with a nominal enrolment campus. A unit offered to both attending students and by distance from the same campus is identified as having both modes of study.
Special approval is required for enrolment into TNE Program units.

To successfully complete Communication for effective leadership you are required to undertake 40 hours of logged service or leadership work over a 15 week period. This will constitute a hurdle requirement. You also need to satisfactorily complete each of the following tasks: * a short introductory and goal setting activity (posted to the MyLO site) (5%) * two peer meetings, followed by a short piece of reflective writing (these meetings may be in person, online or via telephone, video conference , skype or webconference) (25%) * a short persuasive presentation (40%) - format to be negotiated delivered in person at an event, or posted online) * a final reflective task (written or alternative format) and plan for future continuing professional development (30%).
