Successful completion of this program gives direct entry to many undergraduate degree courses, subject to meeting appropriate exit requirements. Please note that entry to all programs is conditional upon final Foundation results.
Please note, meeting the minimum GPA required for Medicine, Pharmacy and Nursing does not guarantee entry, due to limited availability of places.
Course objectives
The University of Tasmania's Foundation Studies Program is an innovative and challenging two-semester course which equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary for academic success at the tertiary level. The program is a 'Standard Foundation' as approved by Australian government legislation. This is an excellent opportunity for international students seeking an alternative pathway into undergraduate degrees.

Course structure
The course provides a standard Foundation Studies Program (as defined under the National Standards for Foundation Programs) and is delivered across two full semesters. The two semesters provide thirteen weeks of teaching plus mid-semester breaks, study breaks and exam periods.
The Foundation Studies Program can be undertaken in one of five content streams.*
In addition to core units, students select a number of elective units to fulfill the requirements for a stream.

English Language Proficiency
Applicants whose previous study has not been in English are required to demonstrate their ability by results of an approved test.

- IELTS - minimum overall band 5.5 with no score below 5.0
- TOEFL (iBT) - 52 with a minimum writing score not less than 14

Students who are planning to start a Foundation Studies course at the University of Tasmania, but have not yet met the English language entry requirements, will be able to do so by completing UTASAccess - English Level 5, which satisfies the minimum English language entry requirements for Foundation Studies Program.

Articulation to
Successful completion of a Foundation Studies Program allows students to progress to an undergraduate degree course at the University of Tasmania. Each course requires a specific Grade Point Average (GPA) from the Foundation Studies Program for entry, and this varies from course to course.
A GPA is calculated from the results of all units studied. The maximum GPA achievable from a Foundation Studies program is 7.0.

Fees & scholarships
Domestic students
Domestic students enrolled in a full fee paying place are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee but this fee is incorporated in the fees you pay for each unit you enrol in. Full fee paying domestic students do not have to make any additional SSAF payments.

International students
2021 Total Course Fee (international students): $20,800 AUD*.
Course cost based on a rate of $20,800 AUD per standard, full-time year of study (100 credit points).
