Careers in health sciences
Working in Health Sciences provides unique challenges and rewards. It’s an area that attracts people who are interested in technically oriented healthcare fields and those with an entrepreneurial spirit.
Health science courses encourage inquiry, investigation and research, with many opportunities to go beyond the classroom and work closely with academic mentors and work or volunteer in the community.
These courses develop valuable knowledge and skills for jobs where personal integrity and professionalism are essential qualities. Whether you’re looking to extend your study in a medical area, go into sports science or concentrate on community care, the workplace skills you learn, such as evidence-based problem-solving, critical thinking and decision-making, effective communication and time management, are all appreciated by employers.
There are opportunities in developing new medicines or therapies and undertaking trials or diagnostic tests. Sports science is an emerging field and specialist positions exist in training and measuring performance. Community care workers provide care, supervision and support for disadvantaged, disabled and aged people dealing with chronic illness, dementia, disability or other factors affecting their quality of life.
Paramedics have the knowledge and skills to assess and manage the broad range of clinical presentations in an out-of-hospital setting. They are often among the first trained healthcare professionals in critical situations. Our Bachelor of Paramedic Practice is a two-year degree that consists of generic nursing, bioscience and specialist paramedic units. It is offered in Hobart and in Rozelle (Sydney).
