Duration refers to the minimum and maximum amounts of time in which this course can be completed. It will be affected by whether you choose to study full or part time, noting that some programs are only available part time.

The Associate Degree in Applied Technologies is a new pathway to a career in two exciting high-tech fields: Cyber Security and Cyber-Physical Systems (robotics and automation). This program has been developed in response to industry demand for graduates with practical skills in these rapidly expanding areas.

Throughout the program, you’ll acquire hands-on experience with real world issues facing almost every industry today, such as automation, information security and data analysis. With its work-based, industry-led delivery and its emphasis on applied technology, the program is a world away from traditional IT degrees. The two year (full time) duration also means that you’ll graduate faster with highly relevant work-ready skills. If you’ve never considered a career in IT but love all things ‘tech’, this program could be for you!

Industry experts have helped to develop the course and are actively involved in the delivery through teaching, site visits, case studies and work placements. This ensures that you’ll be equipped with best practice processes and skills for a rapidly developing career path.

The program is available for full-time and part-time study across all campuses in Tasmania and is delivered through a combination of online study, face-to-face classes, practical workshops and tutorials.

The specialisations currently available are Cyber Security or Cyber-Physical Systems (robotics and automation). In both specialisations, you’ll complete a major project applying the principles you’ve learned.

Cyber-Physical Systems (Robotics and automation)

Cyber-Physical Systems (Robotics and Automation) are systems in which physical processes are monitored and controlled by computer systems. This specialisation covers areas such as sensor technologies, data capture, data analysis and visualisation processes and introduces students to industry applications such as electric grids, robotics, and driverless vehicles. The program provides students with the latest knowledge and skills to make a real impact in this exciting and rapidly expanding area.

Cyber Security

This specialisation has been developed to create cyber security technologists who have the technical and project management skills to work across any organisation. Subjects are industry-specific and cover areas such as protecting systems from hackers and detecting & preventing credit card fraud. Our course is industry-specific, taught by industry, so you study subjects important to business – like implementing security technologies to protect against hackers or credit card fraud. Students will complete a project applying principles covered within this course.

Experiential education and work integrated learning approaches are central to the Associate Degree in Applied Technologies. Students will therefore learn through project and problem-based learning activities such as field work, case studies (local and international), action learning, design thinking, simulated environments, placements, data for decision making, wicked problems and more. These approaches ensure practical experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment and that students have the opportunity to develop work-related skills, knowledge and behaviours.

In the first year of an associate degree, students are introduced to learning through practice and exposed to authentic experiences that develop skills and understandings related to industry, community or global needs. Students engage with (i) a range of methods and approaches to practice, (ii) principles and perspectives such as values, ethics, empathy and leadership in real world scenarios, (iii) reflection and deliberative thinking as a means of developing knowledge, skills, attitudes and aspirations, and (iv) ways of understanding problems and developing solutions through active inquiry.

A key component of the course, which is established in the first year, is a Practice Manual. The Practice Manual contains all portfolio requirements for the course, including the Professional Development Plan (PDP) and is a collection of evidence that highlights personal, academic and professional development. Dedicated teachers are in coaching roles to support you to continuously develop your Practice Manual over the duration of the course. This involves working with you to determine what evidence best highlights your ability to apply theory in practice, and what activities and experiences showcase your achievement in terms of transferable skills, professional attributes, technical skills and knowledge, and so forth.

The second year of an associate degree builds on the concept of learning through practice by introducing students to more complex learning experiences. Students are therefore introduced to (i) discipline-based skills and knowledge in dynamic practice situations, (ii) concepts of managing effective relationships and communicating with others, (iii) the development and use of adaptive leadership skills and how these skills relate to innovative and entrepreneurial practice, and (iv) the nature of responsible, accountable and reflective workplace skills, and creative and critical thinking relevant to para-professional practice. In addition, students are expected to exercise self-awareness, initiative and judgement to manage themselves and professional relationships effectively. On completion of the two years, students are expected to have a fully developed Practice Manual that highlights all their achievements, including the development of transferable skills and professional attributes, so they leave with a tangible asset that showcases what industry are looking for.

Graduation from the Associate Degree in Applied Technologies can provide an entry opportunity for those who have not worked in technologies, accelerate progression through a graduate’s present organisation, or open up new career paths and opportunities.

Specialisation - Cyber-Physical Systems

On completion of the Associate Degree in Applied Technologies (Cyber-Physical Systems) you will be able to:

  • Commence employment or enhance your current employment as a cyber-physical systems technologist; or
  • Articulate into further undergraduate study with credit into a specified University of Tasmania bachelor degree. This further study will prepare you to transition into leadership and management roles.

New to Cyber-Physical Systems and never worked in the industry before?

For graduates new to Cyber-Physical Systems, this qualification could assist you to gain roles which could include service technician, sales consultant, systems technician, site installation technician or project support officer.

Already working in industry and want to fast track or leverage off past experience?

For graduates already working in the information and communications technology industry, the Associate degree in Applied Technologies (Cyber-Physical Systems) may enable you to progress into managerial roles, leading a small team, becoming a specialist in the cyber-physical systems field.

HECS scholarships for 2020

Domestic students applying to study in 2020 will receive a 100% tuition fee waiver for the first 4 units and a 50% waiver for the next four.
