Our course combines core business subjects covering areas such as management, finance, marketing and planning with a choice of electives to hone a skill set that aligns with your career goals. It is a pathway for you to do further professional development or a pathway into the Bachelor of Business.
The Diploma of Applied Business will help you build on your experience to develop the business skills you need to respond to opportunities in the workplace and to meet the challenges with confidence. Whether you’re an aspiring entrepreneur or an assistant manager looking to step up to the next level, this course is a great stepping stone to a new or accelerated career.
This course is offered online and you can choose to study full-time or part-time.
Course objectives
You’ll be able to make informed career choices through being able to explain some of the core workings of organisations in contemporary environments and situate their interdisciplinary knowledge within business and social landscapes.
A key to the distinctiveness of the Diploma of Applied Business is its adoption of applied, blended, and online styles of learning. Students develop the knowledge and skills within an authentic learning approach. This integrated approach applies an array of experiential learning opportunities. You’ll be able to situate this work within the not-for-profit, profit, and/or government sectors that operate within the business environment context. Studying online, allowing you to balance your studies with your work, family and personal commitments.
Completing our Diploma of Applied Business will give you a pathway to a great career in business across a range of industries. You will develop in-depth knowledge of contemporary business concepts and practices along with the capabilities to identify, source and analyse information relevant to business and social challenges.
You will have the skills to professionally and effectively communicate with a range of stakeholders that will support you in the workplace. The practical knowledge you learn will take you straight to the workplace and help you meet your personal career development goals.
You can advance your study with electives chosen from other disciplines across the university and progress into the Bachelor of Business, with advanced standing for units completed in the Diploma.

Real-world experience
You’ll learn through project and problem-based learning activities such as field work, case studies (local and international), action learning, design thinking, data for decision making, through simulated environments. These approaches ensure practical experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment providing you with the opportunity to develop work-related skills, knowledge and behaviours. Student performance will be measured via a schedule of assessment tasks which exemplify authenticity and enable students to evidence their learning in their own Practice Manual.
Become a Student Ambassador
Improve your communication, teamwork and leadership skills, meet new people, inspire and help others, and developing lasting friendships and networks as a student ambassador. Our ambassadors proudly represent the University throughout Tasmania in schools, at University and community events, and support a range of recruitment and engagement activities.
Though the Student Ambassador Program you’ll have many opportunities for training and professional development, experience in real-world community engagement and outreach, networking, and public speaking. Plus, end up with a key point of distinction on your CV.

Graduation from the Diploma of Applied Business can provide you an entry opportunity if you have not worked in a business settings, accelerate progression through a graduate's present organisation, or open up new career paths and opportunities.
New to Applied Business and never worked in the industry before?
If you are a new graduate to Applied Business, this qualification could assist you to gain roles such as trainee positions with managers, team leaders, field officers, and researchers.
Already working and want to fast track or leverage off past experience?
If you are already working in Business, an Applied Business qualification may enable you to progress from assistant positions to managerial roles, lead a small team, become specialists, salespersons and liaise better with suppliers or customers.

Course structure
The Diploma of Applied Business includes four compulsory units (each at 12.5 credit points) as a core in applied business and 50 credit points of elective units.

Entry requirements
For Domestic students
We encourage you to apply for the courses you most want to study. If you are not eligible to enter your chosen course right now, the UTAS admissions team will work with you to find the best pathway option.

Domestic applicants who recently completed secondary education (in the past two years)
This course does not use ATAR as part of the admission process. To be an eligible for an offer, applicants must have completed the Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE) or an equivalent qualification.
Domestic applicants with higher education study
To be eligible for an offer, you must have:
- Partially completed an undergraduate course at Diploma level or higher (or equivalent). You must have completed at least one unit of study (equivalent to 12.5 UTAS credit points), at 100 level or higher and which may include 100 level units completed in the UTAS Diploma of University Studies. If you have failed any units, your application may be subject to further review before an offer is made; OR
- Completed the UTAS University Preparation Program (or an equivalent qualification offered by an Australian University).
Domestic applicants with VET / TAFE study
To be eligible for an offer, you must have completed a Certificate III or higher (or equivalent) in any discipline.
Applications on the basis of work or life experience
Applicants without senior secondary, tertiary or VET / TAFE study can complete a personal competency statement.
Applicants may be eligible for an offer if they have relevant work and / or life experiences which demonstrate a capacity to succeed in this course.
For International students

Credit transfer
You may be eligible for advanced standing (ie. credit) of up to 50 credit points if you have completed a cognate Undergraduate Certificate or similar course at this university or other approved tertiary institution. Cognate undergraduate certificate courses for Z1B Diploma of Applied Business are: Z0C Undergraduate Certificate in Community Support, Z0D Undergraduate Certificate in Agriculture, Z0L Undergraduate Certificate in Agribusiness, Z0M Undergraduate Certificate in Small Business, Z0N Undergraduate Certificate in Applied Design, Z0P Undergraduate Certificate in Fermentation, Z0Q Undergraduate Certificate in Applied Technologies, Z0R Undergraduate Certificate in Equipment Design and Project Management.
Articulation
Students who have completed a cognate Undergraduate Certificate to Z1B Diploma of Applied Business may articulate into Z1B Diploma of Applied Business with up 50 credit points of advanced standing. Cognate undergraduate certificate courses for Z1B Diploma of Applied Business are: Z0C Undergraduate Certificate in Community Support, Z0D Undergraduate Certificate in Agriculture, Z0L Undergraduate Certificate in Agribusiness, Z0M Undergraduate Certificate in Small Business, Z0N Undergraduate Certificate in Applied Design, Z0P Undergraduate Certificate in Fermentation, Z0Q Undergraduate Certificate in Applied Technologies, Z0R Undergraduate Certificate in Equipment Design and Project Management.
The following non-cognate Undergraduate Certificates may also be considered for articulation into the Diploma of Applied Business with up to 50 credit points of advanced standing: 30B Undergraduate Certificate in Auditing and Assurance, 30C Undergraduate Certificate in Climate Accounting, 30D Undergraduate Certificate in Taxation, 30E Undergraduate Certificate in Marketing Analytics
Students who complete Z1B Diploma of Applied Business may articulate into B3A Bachelor of Business or other Bachelor degrees with up to 100 credit points of advanced standing.

Fees & scholarships
Domestic students
Cost shouldn’t get in the way of you studying.
If you’re a domestic student, you may be eligible for a Commonwealth Supported Place in this course. This means your fees will be subsidised by the Australian Government. You’ll only need to pay the student contribution amount for each unit you study within the course.
You may also be able to defer payment of the student contribution amount by accessing a HECS-HELP loan from the Government. If eligible, you’ll only have to pay your tuition fees once you start earning above a specific amount.
