Anne MestitzThe Appearance of Things

Anne Mestitz is a visual artist and intuitive maker whose primary focus is on colour, form and line as a means of expression. Underpinning these formal devices is an enquiry into the complicity of the viewer, the nature of visual perception, making "concrete" sensation and the role of aesthetic experience in the work.

Anne completed a PhD in 2011 and has taught Sculpture and Drawing at the Tasmanian College of the Arts on a casual basis over several years. Anne has exhibited extensively locally and nationally, has received solo commissions, is a previous winner of the Tasmanian Sculpture by the Sea and was a recent recipient of the Qantas Foundation Art Award in which she visited New York for a month.

In her Arts Forum presentation Anne aims to unravel how works appear in her studio practice and what conditions are present for the making of things. If you accept that appearance does not equate with reality it elevates our attention to the perception and wonder of things. She will reflect on how her artworks are not particularly a telling of meaning but rather a showing of sensations through the use of colour, form and reduction. She will also show things peripheral to my practice but in a strange way help explicate her sensibility as a maker.
