Chris Arneaud-ClarkeWhat Makes You Beautiful?

Chris Arneaud-Clarke teaches Art Theory at the Tasmanian College of the Arts and the Victorian College of the Arts. He has taught Media Theory and Cinema Studies at Macquarie, Deakin and Monash Universities, and has worked as a studio advisor at VCA. He has a particular interest in music, and has collaborated in performances for the Hobart Fringe Festival, Melbourne Festival, and Melbourne Now.

Chris's Art Forum presentation will take the form of a theoretical experiment: first, a brief elaboration of Immanuel Kant's critique of aesthetic judgement will offer a few ideas on what might be called the "practical philosophy" that we engage in whenever we say that something is, or isn't, beautiful; these ideas can then be tested out - and a good way to do that would be by considering the practical philosophy of the band, One Direction. Their song, "What Makes You Beautiful" (2011) was much derided on the internet not only for its strange logic, but furthermore for its negative message about insecurity, self-esteem and gender relations. Perhaps these, too, are Kantian problems.
