The Derwent ProjectThe Derwent Project

The Derwent Project is a collaboration between David Stephenson and Martin Walch, working with Hydro Tasmania and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery towards a major exhibition in 2017. From its headwaters in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, the Derwent River watershed is rich in natural and cultural history, flowing through ten hydroelectric energy developments before entering the urban estuary at Hobart. The Derwent Project is developing new aesthetic approaches for representing such a multilayered ecosystem, to convey its environmental changes and energy exchanges with clarity and impact.

Associate Professor David Stephenson has an MFA from the University of New Mexico and a PhD from the University of Tasmania, where he taught from 1982 to 2013. Stephenson's work has been widely exhibited, including solo exhibitions at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, ACCA, National Gallery of Victoria, Cleveland Museum of Art, and Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. His work is included in many collections including the NGA, NGV, AGNSW, MCA Sydney, San Francisco MoMA, and New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. Princeton Architectural Press, New York has published two monographs of his photographs – Visions of Heaven (2005) and Heavenly Vaults (2009).
