Jürgen BockSpecial Event | 12.00 - 1.00pm

Jürgen Bock is a writer, curator and director of the Maumaus Independent Study Program and attached exhibition space Lumiar Cité in Lisbon. He has curated exhibitions in museums and galleries internationally including: the CCB Project Room (Centro Cultural de Belém, Lisbon, with a.o. Eleanor Antin, Nathan Coley, Harun Farocki, and Renée Green in 2000–2001); Andreas Siekmann, India Triennale, New Delhi, 2005; Ângela Ferreira, 'Maison Tropicale', Portuguese pavilion, Venice Biennale, 2007; Heimo Zobernig, Palacio de Velázquez, Museo Nacional de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, 2012; and Allan Sekula, 'The Dockers' Museum', La Criée, Rennes, 2012/Johann Jacobs Museum, Zurich, 2014. He has produced Manthia Diawara's films 'Maison Tropicale' and 'Negritude: A Dialogue Between Wole Soyinka and Senghor' and has been responsible for the organization of numerous international conferences.

Jürgen's presentation will focus on the art of Heimo Zobernig, which engages with the history of art objects, their display and consequently the exhibition format itself. Zobernig deconstructs 'necessary' myths of art history, which he subtly undermines through playful strategies of imitation, disruption and spectacle. Zobernig's references towards 'operational systems' of contemporary and modern art are detectable in his paintings, sculptures, installations, videos and exhibitions – which he considers to also be a medium of art making. Jurgen will discuss how Zobernig engages with a complex web of references and forms that reveal a sophisticated criticality in his practice from which, paradoxically, his own work is not exempt.

This event has been generously supported by the Institute for the Study of Social Change.
