PROGRAMS - Opportunities for emerging artists

Michael Edwards, Director, Contemporary Art Spaces Tasmania (CAST)

Michael Edwards is a Hobart-based arts administrator and curator and has occupied the position of director of Contemporary Art Spaces Tasmania (CAST) since 2004.  Prior to this he was Touring Manager for the NETS touring exhibitions program after a decade of working in various roles across arts organisations, agencies and education institutions in Tasmania.

Since 1993 he has maintained an active involvement in the service of contemporary visual art, sitting on numerous advisory panels and working committees at both a local and national level.  He currently serves as: a volunteer for the University of Tasmania’s Plimsoll Gallery Committee; Contributing Editor, Tasmania for Artlink; Treasurer for Contemporary Art Organisations Australia (CAOs), and a member of Hobart City Council’s Arts Advisory and Public Art Special Committees (since 2005), and Arts Tasmania’s gallery advisory panel.

Michael will be overseeing the delivery of the JUMP National Mentoring Program for Young and Emerging Artists in Tasmania in 2011-12.

Kath Melbourne, Program Director, Artstart - Australia Council for the Arts

Kath is currently relishing the opportunity she has at The Australia Council to take a leading role for a team working on ArtStart and the Opportunities for Young and Emerging Artists programs.

Passionate and committed to the arts since she was blue haired, wearing Doc Martins and listening to Nirvana; this commitment has taken her from dux of Newtown High School of the Performing Arts to flame haired flaming whip cracking circus performer, theatre production manager, company manager, festival creative producer; and now to a national role in supporting the careers of emerging artists, performance makers, musicians, writers and designers.

She is happiest in places where she is able to innovate, solve difficult problems, think big picture but still maintain an ear close enough to the ground be inspired and challenged by art makers of all disciplines.

She is proud to have been part of projects, companies and processes throughout her career which have broke new ground, exceeded expectations and defied gravity.
