Alicia King and Serena Rosevear, Artist-in-Residence 2014, arts@work

Alicia KingAlicia King | Back to the Future

Alicia King is an Australian interdisciplinary artist.  King’s object-based works navigate the transformative potential of biological matter.  Reflective of her practice, which explores biological permutations in humans, animals and the wider environment, these works allude to that which generally lies outside of the everyday category of the ‘living’.

While AIR at Launceston Church Grammar, Alicia is developing part of a series exploring the transformative relationship between biology and technology.  The work draws upon ideas of artificial nature and a new aesthetic of biology inextricably bound with alchemical reformation through developing technologies.

Serena RosevearSerena Rosevear | Teabags and a 1960’s ditty

In searching for my identity as an artist, specifically a maker of objects both for use and contemplation, I have wandered through and around the subject of Consumer Culture. Setting out on a path of material exploration as the premise for my AIR residency I soon found myself back on the same familiar subject, thinking and talking and making about how consumers choose, use and discard their stuff.  This work has been inspired by teabags and a protest song written before I was born.

I am a visual artist who works primarily with ceramics, but also choose materials such as paper, textiles and timber as appropriate. A recent graduate of the University of Tasmania (BCA, First Class Honours, 2012) I am currently establishing my studio facilities with the assistance of an ArtStart grant, while also participating in a residency at St Patrick’s College.
