David EdgarThe image titled The Deep forms part of an exhibition by Hobart based artist David Edgar taking place at Piomena Gallery in Launceston over February and March 2014. For a number of years David’s art practice has focused on an interest in drawing, place and existential film. These elements have a grounding in many years of academic training experimenting with techniques of printmaking (layering, inversion and stretching tonal values - to name a few), experimental and life drawing and art and film theory. More recently his practice has explored visual effects of old faded and grainy black and white photography and techniques of film composition with particular interest given to the work of filmmakers Michelangelo Antonioni and Andrei Tarkovsky and their sublime use of otherness, stillness, slowness and emptiness.

For Artsforum, David will discuss the many and varied influences of his practice, elements of his experiences of place and landscape in particular reference to two Tasmanian landscapes and the effect of these on his mark making, and will show a number of his more recent works.

David has a Master of Fine Art by research from the University of Tasmania completed on an Australian Postgraduate Award scholarship. He has exhibited in Hobart, Launceston, Burnie, Evandale and St Helens in Tasmania as well as in Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales and internationally in the US. He recently won the Corangamarah Art Prize in Victoria and has been selected as a finalist in the City of Hobart Art Prize, Marie Ellis OAM Drawing Prize, Bay of Fires Art Prize, and Sunshine Coast Art Prize. He also recently received Australia Council for the Arts funding and was the award-winning recipient of the Artist-in-Residence program from the Cradle Coast Campus of the University in the north west of Tasmania. 2014 includes exhibitions in Burnie, Launceston and Boston in the US. He is currently represented by Handmark Gallery in Tasmania and Libby Edwards Galleries in Victoria, works part-time with the State government’s arts agency Arts Tasmania, teaches drawing at the Tasmanian College of the Arts in Hobart, and is co-curating a drawing exhibition in Hobart with Dr Mary Scott based around the process of mark making.
