‘After Vigeland’ - an everlasting impression: Portraying emotion using gesture, and using memory as a catalyst for sculptural self-representation.

This project investigates gesture, using the male body as subject, to depict personal emotions. Sculptural works represent earliest memories of participating within a strict Catholic education system as a young boy; becoming a ‘boy solider’ at age fifteen, and more recent experiences as a maturing male aged in my sixties and living in Tasmania. The project examines my relationship with sculpture that evolved from viewing work at Vigeland Sculpture Park in Oslo in 1966, and the impact this has on the creation of my work in the sculpture studio today.

"Are we there yet?"

"Are we there yet?" demonstrates the use of minimalistic clay forms exploring the idea of distorted childhood memories. Documented through the use of digital media, this particular body of work specifically looks at personal experiences related to travel and lifestyle.

The Translation of Virtual Space into Ceramic Form

My current body of work involves the use of the ceramic slip trailing process as a method of investigating the potential of translating rigid building systems and computer design methods of the urban landscape into organic, ceramic forms. The process of translation leaves open opportunities for imaginative responses reflecting a fluid dual relationship between the internal space and external structure.

During the process of art making, I privilege the act of exploring the nuances of repetitive actions and their effect on my practice. As my forms evolve there is adaption, reflection, and serendipitous direction of the emergent object, which mirrors the making process.

TCotA Forum is a series of free public lectures held at the Tasmanian College of the Arts (Inveresk). Students and members of the public are welcome to attend.
