The Birchalls Contemporary Art Prize for Students (BCAPS) has two categories—upper secondary and tertiary—and is judged by nationally respected artists and curators. It aims to showcase students early in their development as artists, with some having not exhibited publicly before. Importantly, the Finalists Exhibition gives these artists the opportunity to participate in a group exhibition, in a professional gallery space, alongside their peers. The Finalists Exhibition itself provides the Tasmanian community with something new, not necessarily available from other exhibitions—it is an opportunity to enjoy student's works from a variety of perspectives and using a variety of media. BCAPS is an initiative of Birchalls and the Academy Gallery.
