How big is your barbecue?
Symbols and meaning in advertising messages

Advertising is seen by some as part of the evil capitalist system convincing the public to spend on products they do not need. The other side sees advertising as simply communicating information consumers need to make informed decisions on what to buy. Somewhere in there business and brands use a variety of ‘tools’ to get their message across – images, sound, text, figures (men, women, children, animals), action, and emotion.

What does it all mean? This Forum will tell you, at least some of it anyway!

What is the point? For artists having a better understanding of the role of the symbols all around you can only be good! For everyone, knowing more about what marketing people are up to will make you a better consumer!

Dr Kim Lehman is the Director of the Centre of Cultural Value at the University of Tasmania. His research interests focus on the arts and cultural sectors, with streams investigating marketing, development, management, and tourism issues. He leads a number of research projects as part of this focus, and has published and presented his research internationally. He is currently Visiting Research Fellow at the Liverpool Business School in the UK.

Kim is also a writer, curator and visual artist. As an artist he works in photo-montage, video and installation and is represented by Gallery Pejean in Tasmania. He has been a finalist in a number of national art prizes and was the first video artist to be selected as a finalist in the Glover Prize for landscape painting (2015).

Please note this Arts Forum will be held on Wednesday 30 August, 12noon - 1pm.
