Formula SAE is an international student engineering design competition, hosted by the Society of Automotive Engineers. The University of Tasmania Motorsport team is a student driven Formula SAE team comprised of predominantly engineering students, as well as students from other disciplines such as business and media. Students take on the role of a small production team. Within a year they conceive, finance and manufacture a prototype formula-style racing car that adheres to specific regulations. They then race the car at the annual Formula SAE competition. The SAE project is embedded in the curriculum. Students all the way from first year to postgraduate work on the team, with design projects integrated into the third and four-year subjects. Formula SAE (FSAE) is internationally renowned as the world’s largest engineering design competition, hosted by the Society of Automotive Engineers. Since its formation in the US in 1981, the FSAE competition has expanded across the world and is recognised for producing young engineers at the top of their field. The project is managed and run entirely by students and participants gain invaluable real-world experience in practical engineering, project management and team work.

The Australasian competition is held annually and attracts teams from over 30 universities from across Australia and around the world. The UTAS student team last ranked 10th place out of 35 Universities at the Australasian FSAE-A competition held at Calder Park, Victoria in 2016.

The Car Show is a wonderful display of how our UTAS student researchers are working at the front line of engineering in a real-world environment.

Presented in partnership with the University of Tasmania Collections Project and School of Engineering.
