Thinker in Residence

The first Art Forum for 2018 introduces SOCA's Thinker in Residence, Chris Arneaud-Clarke.

Chris lectures in Critical and Theoretical Studies at the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne, and gives public talks and lectures in Melbourne and Hobart.

In a presentation on the aesthetics of some well-known works of conceptual art such as Michael Craig Martin's An Oak Tree (1973) and Joseph Kosuth's One and Three Chairs (1965-7), Chris will suggest some overlooked implications of John Chandler and Lucy Lippard's equally well-known critical essay, "The Dematerialization of Art" (1968), which defended and attempted to explain the contemporary focus on ideas rather than objects.

Arts Forum is a weekly series of free public lectures held at the School of Creative Arts, Hunter Street Campus, during the semester. The series provides a unique opportunity to hear local, national and international visiting artists, scholars and presenters from diverse sectors of the Creative Arts discuss their area of professional practice. All current students, prospective students, and members of the public are welcome.
