WINTERACEAE 1:25

The only Tasmanian member of Winteraceae is Tasmannia lanceolata (Mountain pepper; also sold commercially as Tasmanian Pepperberry). It is a shrub or small tree that ranges from wet forests to alpine areas. It has narrow, entire margined, alternate leaves that have a very distinctive hot taste. The stems are usually distinctly red. The flowers are relatively small, with a small but indeterminate number of free, yellow petals. They are unisexual, with male flowers having an indeterminate number of free stamens, and the female flowers usually having one superior carpel. The fruit is berry-like and black or reddish black.
