This family includes a range of native and introduced shrubs and herbs. The native species are mostly species of coastal areas, and dominate saltmarsh vegetation. The introduced species are weeds of mostly dry habitats. The family has very small flowers, usually in cymose clusters. The leaves include highly succulent forms and leaves that are mealy from a covering of salt glands.
