The
native Tasmanian Polygonaceae include Muehlenbeckia, which
are woody climbers or prostrate shrubs, and a few species of small
herbs. However, some introduced herbaceous species are very common
weeds. These include Polygonum, Rumex and Emex
species. The most characteristic feature of the family is that the
leaves are alternate and each has a very distinctive stipule called
an ochrea. This forms a membranous sheath around the stem. The flowers
of these plants are small and inconspicuous.
