Two species

S.  quinqueflora

Tasmania has two native species of Sarcocornia. Sarcocornia quinqueflora is shiny green or red, whereas S. blackiana is glaucous. Both are common saltmarsh plant with succulent opposite, scale-like leaves. The foliage is very similar to that of Sclerostegia, but the habit is very different. Sclerostegia is an upright, much branched shrub, whereas Sarcocornia spp form ground covers, although the terminal branches are erect. Also Sclerostegia only has 1-3 flowers per node, whereas Sarcocornia has 3-9 flowers per node.
