Tasmania has
four native one introduced species of Scleranthus (knawels) The most
conspicuous species is the cushion plant of dry areas, S.
biflorus. S. brockiei is an alpine or subalpine cushion plant.
The other species are lax herbs. S. annuus is a smallish,
much branched common annual weed. The distinctive floral feature the
perigynous flowers (the floral disc is extended into a tube that
surrounds the ovary). The cushion forming species can be confused
with Colobanthus species.
