Carpha
is represented by only three species in Tasmania (all native), but
is often the dominant genus in sedgy subalpine and alpine
vegetation. It is rather grass-like in habit (tufted and growing to
perhaps 15cm tall), but the leaves tend to rather tougher than most
grasses (although it may easily be confused with alpine Danthonia
species). The distinctive feature is the fruit, which has three to
six feathery bristles that facilitate wind dispersal of the fruit. |
