Tasmania has two species of Nothofagus, the evergreen species, N. cunninghamii, and the deciduous species, N. gunnii. Nothofagus cunninghamii is the dominant tree species of most of Tasmania's rainforest. Nothofagus gunnii is Tasmania's only native winter deciduous tree or shrub. Both species have small, simple, unisexual flowers.
