The Haplomitriaceae, along with the
Treubiaceae, are basal families
of liverworts. In Tasmania, the Haplomitriaceae is represented by
a single species, Haplomitrium gibbsiae.
The leaves of Haplomitrium are entire or with a few broad
based teeth. The leaves are transversely inserted but because the
underleaves are as large as the leaves, the leaves (including the underleaves)
hence appear to be spirally arranged on the stem. The leaf
cells are thin walled and contain numerous round granular oil
bodies.
