The Lunulariaceae is represented by the extremely robust weedy thallose liverwort
Lunularia cruciata (Crescent-cup liverwort).
Originally from Europe, this species invades gardens, parks and
disturbed wet forest tracks, typically forming large patches.
When present, the crescent-shaped gemmae
cups make this species unmistakable. Sporophytes are rare but
look like a cross (crucifix) when viewed from above, thereby giving rise
to the specific epithet 'cruciata'.
