Tasmania
has two native species of Callistemon (a third species listed
in the Student's Flora, C. paludosus, is now recognised as
part of C. pallidus). C. pallidus is a common lowland
species with large leaves, about 3-6 cm long and 4-10 mm wide. C.
viridiflorus is a common species in boggy places, especially in
the sub-alpine zone. It has hard, sharp leaves 1.5-3 cm long and 2-4
mm wide. Callistemon is closely related to Melaleuca,
but the stamens are not in bundles (as in Melaleuca). In
addition, a red flowered species (native to mainland Australia) may
have become naturalised in the north of the state (e.g. near Pipers
Brook). |
