Conostomum (Bartramiaceae)

C. pusillum

In Tasmania, Conostomum is represented by two species, C. pentastichum and C. pusillum.

The leaves of Conostomum are arranged in 5 ranks on the stem. This character is very clearly defined in C. pentastichum.

In C. pusillum however, this character is not as easily discerned as the leaves tend to twist slightly around the stem. Nevertheless, C. pusillum tends to be smaller (stems up to 6mm tall) than C. pentastichum (up to 20mm).
