Leaves quite tightly overlapping on stem, such that shoots become cylindrical or catkin-like in appearance, if not, then leaf axils with gemmae; leaves ovate to ovate-lanceolate, never obovate or spathulate; leaf margins without teeth 

Leaves typically spreading from stem, shoots never cylinder or catkin-like in appearance; gemmae rare; leaf shape various, sometimes obovate or spathulate; leaf margins usually with teeth, at least near apex
