In
Tasmania, Ephemeropsis is represented by a single species,
E. trentepohlioides. E. trentepohlioides
is an inconspicuous moss growing on twigs or branches in wet forest
or rain forest. This moss does not have true leaves but are instead
comprised of a mass of brown protonema (algal-like filaments).
Microscopically, the oblique cross walls of the protonema
conclusively distinguishes this species from an algae.
