The Ephemeraceae in Tasmania consists of a single genus and a single species,
Ephemerum cristatum.
E. cristatum is a minute earth moss no taller than 0.5mm.
The numerous persistent and dichotomously branched protonema is a
readily recognized taxonomic feature. The leaves are lance-like or
spathula shaped are deeply incised, particularly towards the leaf
apex.
The shortly-stalked capsules are small and red or red-brown when
mature.
