EPHEMERACEAE

The Ephemeraceae in Tasmania consists of a single genus and a single species, Ephemerum cristatum.

E. cristatum is a minute earth moss no taller than 0.5mm. The numerous persistent and dichotomously branched protonema is a readily recognized taxonomic feature. The leaves are lance-like or spathula shaped are deeply incised, particularly towards the leaf apex.

The shortly-stalked capsules are small and red or red-brown when mature.
