In
Tasmania, Hypnum is represented by 2 or 3 species. Hypnum
chrysogaster is a common and conspicuous moss of rainforest and
wet forest. It differs from Hypnum cupressiforme in having a
neater branched shoots but is otherwise distinguished by leaf
anatomical features.
H. cupressiforme (colloqually known as 'Hyp cup') is a
cosmopolitan moss and in Tasmania is represented by at least 3
varieties.
H. nelsonii is an obscure species from Mt Nelson which has
not been collected since the type collection.
