In Tasmania, the Hypnodendraceae contains two genera and 3 species of highly conspicuous
mosses.
The family is of biogeographical interest as it is considered to be a Gondwanan
relict of southern hemisphere cool temperate rainforest, with
closely related relatives in other southern hemisphere continents.
All Hypnodendraceae have a tree-like (dendroid) lifeform
and in ideal conditions form extensive colonies over rock or soil. Tasmania has three
species under this family.
