In
Tasmania, Lembophyllum is represented a single species, L.
divulsum, which occurs in two varieties (var. divulsum
and var. clandestinum).
L. divulsum (colloquially known as 'String-of-Pearls') is a
common mat-forming moss of wet forest and may be found growing on a
range of substrates from logs to rocks.
The deeply concave leaves are circular or oblong, typically wider
than long, and are closely arranged in a spiral fashion on the stem.
Capsules are curved when mature and borne on a stalk 1-2 cm long.
L. divulsum var. divulsum is the smaller of the two
varieties, with leaves c 0.6mm wide and usually infertile.
L. divulsum var. clandestinum has leaves twice as
large as the previous variety and is more commonly fruiting. This
variety is sometimes considered a separate species (L.
clandestinum).
