Leucobryum is a genus of mosses with worldwide distribution
in temperate and tropical regions (except Antarctica).
In
Tasmania, Leucobryum is represented by a single species,
L. candidum.
L. candidum is a widespread moss of wet forest and rainforest.
L. candidum often grows as mats on logs or on the ground and can
often easily be recognized from a distance just by the the glaucous
(whitish) appearance of the mats. Aged
shoots can assume an almost pendent form. The species is most easily
recognized by the whitish appearance of the shoots and by the
slightly curved leaves which are U-shaped in cross-section.
