Dawsonia (Polytrichaceae)

In Tasmania, Dawsonia is represented by a single species, D. superba var. pulchra.

D. superba is a large turfed moss of wet places. It can grow as tall as 50cm and is considered to be the world's tallest moss. The long white hairs making up the peristome at the mouth of mature capsules is characteristic of the genus.
