In
Tasmania, Gymnostomum is represented by a single species,
G. calcareum. As the name suggests, G. calcareum occurs
especially on calcareous rocks on the roofs of caves and cliffs
where they form bright, pale green patches.
The leaves are tongue-shaped with a U-shaped cross-section. An
obvious nerve is also present, which usually ends just below the
apex but sometimes extending beyond. The capsules are yellowish and
elliptical with a long-beaked operculum and lacking a peristome.
