Tortula is a large moss genus of which Tasmania has 12
species. Some authorities use the genus name Syntrichia for
many of the species in Tortula.
Members of Tortula are small to robust plants, generally
forming turfs. The leaf costa (nerve) is often stout and most
species have a long hairpoint that extends beyond the leaf apex.
Many species of Tortula have very wide distributions in
the northern hemisphere (eg. Tortula muralis) and are common
components of Tasmania's urban bryoflora.
A key to the species is in the works.
